| Kaunas municipal Vincas Kudirka public library, one of the oldest municipal public libraries in Lithuania, was founded by educator and museum worker Vincas Ruzgas in 1925. The library stock consisted of books donated by intelligentsia of the time. During long years of its existence, the library has repeatedly changed its premises and name. In 1944 the library book stock burned down. The library has operated in the current premises since 1960. In 1988 it regained the original name of Vincas Kudirka.
The library has six functional departments established in 1976, when all municipal public libraries in Kaunas were connected into a single network: The Adult Readers Service Department, The Youth, Art and Music Department, The Chidren's Literature Department, Bibliography and Reference Department, the Methodology Department and Acquisition and Cataloguing Department. The library has thirty branch libraries.
The Adult Readers Serving Department has about 50 thousand documents as well as 175 different newspapers and magazines. The library has a number of documents in English. Part of them is received from libraries in Vestfold County, Norway. Children can find books for themselves in every branch of the public library; however, The Children's Literature Department is especially popular among junior pupils.
